Biografía
Gus Green Van Sant, Jr. (nacido el 24 de julio de 1952) es un director, guionista, pintor, fotógrafo, músico y autor estadounidense. Fue nominado a un Premio de la Academia por Logro en Dirección por su película de 1997 "Good Will Hunting" y su película de 2008 "Milk", y ganó la Palma de Oro en el Festival de Cine de Cannes de 2003 por su película "Elephant". Vive en Portland, Oregón.
Su carrera temprana se dedicó a dirigir anuncios de televisión en el Noroeste del Pacífico. En sus películas, ha tratado temas relacionados con la homosexualidad y otras subculturas marginadas.
Su filmografía como escritor y director incluye una adaptación de la novela de Tom Robbins "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues", que cuenta con un elenco diverso (Keanu Reeves, Roseanne Barr, Uma Thurman y k.d. lang, con apariciones especiales de William S. Burroughs y Heather Graham, entre otros); y "My Own Private Idaho", que también protagoniza Reeves junto a River Phoenix.
