Biografia
Jonas Mekas (24-12-1922 - 23-1-2019) nasceu na vila agrícola de Semeniškiai, na Lituânia. Em 1944, ele e seu irmão Adolfas foram levados pelos nazistas para um campo de trabalho forçado em Elmshorn, na Alemanha. Após a guerra, ele estudou filosofia na Universidade de Mainz. No final de 1949, a Organização das Nações Unidas para Refugiados trouxe ambos os irmãos para a cidade de Nova York, onde se estabeleceram em Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Dois meses após sua chegada a Nova York, ele pegou dinheiro emprestado para comprar sua primeira câmera Bolex e começou a registrar breves momentos de sua vida. Logo se envolveu profundamente no movimento de cinema de vanguarda americano. Em 1954, junto com seu irmão, fundou a revista Film Culture, que logo se tornou a publicação de cinema mais importante dos EUA. Em 1958, começou sua lendária coluna Movie Journal no Village Voice. Em 1962, fundou a Film-Makers' Cooperative e, em 1964, a Film-Makers' Cinematheque, que eventualmente se transformou na Anthology Film Archives, um dos maiores e mais importantes repositórios de cinema de vanguarda do mundo e um local de exibição.
Durante todo esse tempo, ele continuou escrevendo poesia e fazendo filmes. Até hoje, publicou mais de 20 livros de prosa e poesia, que foram traduzidos para mais de uma dúzia de idiomas. Sua poesia lituana agora faz parte da literatura clássica lituana e seus filmes podem ser encontrados em museus de destaque ao redor do mundo. Ele é amplamente creditado por desenvolver as formas diarísticas do cinema. Mekas também tem sido ativo como acadêmico, lecionando na New School for Social Research, no International Center for Photography, na Cooper Union, na New York University e no MIT.
O filme de Mekas, "The Brig", foi premiado com o Grande Prêmio no Festival de Cinema de Veneza em 1963. Outros filmes incluem "Walden" (1969), "Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania" (1972), "Lost Lost Lost" (1975), "Scenes from the Life of Andy Warhol" (1990), "Scenes from the Life of George Maciunas" (1992), "As I was Moving Ahead I saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty" (2000), "Letter from Greenpoint" (2005), "Sleepless Nights Stories" (2011) e "Out-takes from the Life of a Happy Man". Em 2007, ele completou uma série de 365 curtas-metragens lançados na internet - um filme a cada dia - e desde então continuou a compartilhar novos trabalhos em seu site.
Desde 2000, Mekas expandiu seu trabalho para a área de instalações cinematográficas, exibindo na Serpentine Gallery, no Centre Pompidou, no Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, no Moderna Museet (Estocolmo), no PS1 Contemporary Art Center MoMA, na Documenta de Kassel, no Museum Ludwig em Colônia, no State Hermitage Museum em São Petersburgo e na Bienal de Veneza.
