In a retrospective assessment, Steven Heller of The Atlantic wrote: "The final cut of The American Dreamer represents a highly-constructed group effort that pushes the limits of documentary." Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian gave the film three out of five stars, writing that the film "tries to be countercultural but the weirdest thing on show is [Hopper's] gun obsession." He concluded that it "has archival value as a study of Hopper and a footnote to the American new wave."

In 2015, The American Dreamer was restored in 2K and released on DVD and Blu-ray by Etiquette Pictures.
